All-Energy – Laughing about NIMBYism and nearly talking to a weather celebrity
In my wanderings around the show floors, I met with some interesting people. One was a chat with S&C’s Andrew Jones on what S&C does to help balance the grid by applying various storage solutions and using voltage control. It was an inspiring chat, and after the close of the official interview, we had a good laugh wondering about NIMBYs and their attitudes.
He would like the world to be a clean place to live for his children and children’s children and thinks some people need to look a bit further than their own back yard when it comes to the need to change our energy generation.
Martians?
Later, I bumped into some guys wearing green t-shirts announcing the launch of www.greenenergynet.com – an online ‘community’ site allowing people to exchange ideas and experiences. The site is not just for those looking to install renewable energy, but also for those with experience of managing their domestic systems. A guy I talked to said it was mainly for small to medium systems and that they hope to team up with the renewable energy industry so the site can act as an interface to the end users.
At lunchtime, I happened to share table with a guy from StormGeo, which offers meteorological services. I thought the name rang a bell, but could not place it, until he said the company was based in Bergen, Norway. It’s the company set up by Norway’s first female weather presenter, Siri Kalvig – a bit of a celebrity up there. Who would have thought I’d get to talk to someone who knew a celebrity... (If you’re Norwegian that is!).
Outsourcing renewables
Another company that caught my interest was Engena, which describe themselves as the people you want to outsource your planning process handling to. They specialise in getting projects through the hoops of planning permission, environmental impact assessments, etc.
I wonder if I can outsource my shoulders and feet after lugging a laptop ++ around a show for two days…
