DuPont and Oerlikon launch solar PV encapsulant

DuPont and Oerlikon Solar have launched an ultra-thin white reflective solar photovoltaic (PV) encapsulant sheet that is part of the DuPont™ PV5200 Series.

The DuPontPV5223 white reflective polyvinyl butyral (PVB) encapsulant is said to enable easier manufacturing of next-generation solar thin-film PV modules that as well as capturing sunlight coming in, reflects more sunlight back through the module delivering more power.

Designed for use with Oerlikon Solar’s Micromorph® technology, DuPont™ PV5223 white reflective PVB encapsulant sheet increases light reflectivity by more than 50% versus paint, to an almost perfect 94% reflectivity. The 0.45 mm solar PV module encapsulant also is more than 40% lighter in weight than traditional 0.76 mm PVB encapsulants, DuPont says.

"The PV5200 Series enables more power from our modules, lower material use, a smaller environmental footprint and easier lamination. It all adds up to a bright outlook for our module manufacturing customers," says Ivan Sinicco, Senior Manager, Module Development at Oerlikon Solar.
